Tips on how to travel consciously
Travelling Consciously: How to Wander Without the Wake
There’s something seductive about escaping. Flights booked on a whim. A suitcase packed with “just in case” joy. That first glass of wine at the airport, where time unspools and rules soften.
But what if our wanderlust didn’t come with baggage?
Travelling consciously doesn’t mean stripping the joy from your journey. It means widening the frame. Looking beyond the curated view and asking: what does it mean to tread lightly, listen deeply, and leave something better than we found it?
It’s not about guilt. It’s about grace.

First, romanticise the right things
Luxury doesn’t have to mean excess. A morning spent in a family-run bakery, learning what goes into the perfect kouign-amann, lingers far longer than a hotel spa treatment that could be anywhere. Swap the checklist for a deeper soak. Choose one museum and give it your full attention. Linger. Notice. Let it imprint.
Stay with storytellers
Whether it's a centuries-old riad, an eco-cabin built from reclaimed wood, or a vineyard that’s farmed regeneratively, where you stay is a vote. Look for places that whisper the land’s story — not shout over it. Ask questions. Who owns it? Who benefits? Who’s been erased?
Learn the language (a little)
Even a few phrases — thank you, delicious, can you recommend — opens hearts. It shows you’re not here to take, but to connect. You don’t have to be fluent. Just willing.
Eat like you mean it
Seek out what’s in season, what’s grown nearby, what locals queue for. Every dish has a lineage. Ask about it. Celebrate it. And if you’re drinking wine, make it one that tells you something about the soil and the season.
Take less. Give more.
You don’t need seven dresses for a four-day trip. But a spare tote bag to pick up litter on a hike? Or a spare suitcase filled with toiletries for a community programme? That’s space well used. Many organisations will happily accept simple donations from travellers — pads, pens, even your hotel miniatures.
Remember: you’re the guest
Whether you’re on a beach in Sicily or in the mountains of Oaxaca, someone calls that place home. Their traditions are not for your entertainment. Their sacred sites are not a backdrop for selfies. Be reverent. Be quiet. Let awe do the talking.
Travelling better doesn’t mean doing it perfectly. It just means doing it with care. With consciousness. With curiosity.
Because the best kind of travel isn’t about collecting places — it’s about collecting perspectives. And maybe, just maybe, returning a little gentler than you left.
