Candle Care Guide

Because our candles are housed in bespoke brass holders—not glass—there are a few unique things to know that might differ from what you're used to.

This guide shares expert tips to help you care for your Ouverture London candle and enjoy the most luxurious, long-lasting burn possible. Because when it comes to indulgence, only the best will do.

How To :

Burn Your Candle

1. Always light candles in a well-ventilated room, away from drafts or fans. This will prevent sooting and ensure an even burn. Keep your space smelling delightful without any unwanted black marks or uneven burning.

2. Due to the nature of our bespoke brass holders, heat convection works a little differently from glass. We've accounted for this in the burn profile.
In the first half of the candle’s life, you may notice a small ring of unmelted wax around the edge. This is completely intentional. It helps moderate the flame and manage heat transfer through the brass.
Once the candle reaches the halfway point, the increased warmth from the brass and internal airflow naturally melts the remaining wax, creating a full edge-to-edge melt pool for the rest of the burn.
[Please always burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface and allow the holder to cool before handling.]

3. You may occasionally notice a green hue develop in your candles. Don’t worry, it’s a completely natural part of using brass. While our holders are lacquered on the inside to help reduce direct contact, brass is a living material that responds to its environment. Exposure to air, moisture, and even time alone can encourage the development of a soft green hue, especially when paired with rich, complex fragrance blends.

This gentle patina is part of brass’s charm—it doesn’t affect the burn, scent, or quality of your candle. Instead, it’s a mark of character and evolution, making each vessel uniquely yours over time.

How To :

Care For Wicks

1. Prevent your candle from burning faster by keeping the wax pool clear of debris, including wick trimmings and matches. These can act as secondary wicks, causing the candle to burn at a faster rate. Keep your candle burning at the optimal pace with this simple tip.

2. Maximise the lifespan of your candles with a candle snuffer. This helps in four ways.

- Cleaner extinguish. Blowing out a candle can cause the wick to smoke heavily, release soot, and scatter hot wax. A snuffer gently cuts off the oxygen supply, extinguishing the flame cleanly with minimal smoke or mess.

-Protects the scent. When you blow out a candle, the burnt smell of smoke can overpower the fragrance left in the room. Snuffing preserves the scent experience, allowing the last impression to be of the candle’s fragrance—not a smoky afterthought.

-Helps your wick last longer. Blowing can disturb the wick, bending or fraying it. A snuffer avoids this, keeping the wick upright and in good shape—meaning more even, reliable burns over time.

-Prevents wax splatter. Air pressure from blowing can cause molten wax to splash outside the vessel. A snuffer avoids this risk completely.

3. Avoid wick displacement and uneven burning by properly centering and straightening the wick after putting out the flame. After extinguishing your candle, wait until the wax has slightly cooled but is still soft—this usually takes around 1–2 minutes. Then, using a wick dipper or the tip of a metal tool (like tweezers or a snuffer handle), gently nudge the wick back to centre and upright. Important: Always check the wax and wick are no longer hot to the touch before adjusting, and never attempt to move the wick while the flame is still burning or the wax is fully molten.

3. Prevent high flames, smoking, or sooting. Simply trim the wick to 5mm after the wax has set for a cleaner, more enjoyable burn. It's the easiest way to keep your home cosy and smelling great.

How To

Store Your Candle

1. Extend the life of your candle and preserve its scent throw. When not in use, store your candle in a cool, dry place - ideally by placing it back in its original Ouverture London tube. This helps protect the wax from dust, moisture, and sunlight, all of which can affect both fragrance and burn quality over time. Proper storage means you won’t have to worry about a dulled scent or performance issues later on. It’s a simple step that keeps your candle at its best—so every light feels as luxurious as the first.

2. The presence of condensation on your candle's surface can indicate improper storage or extended storage time. This can occur on candles with a high fragrance load, such as ours when stored in warm or humid conditions. In addition soy wax is a natural material, and when combined with richly scented oils, it can become more sensitive to temperature shifts. To help prevent this, always store your candle in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. If this has occurred on your candle simply gently blot the surface with a clean paper towel.

3. Make the most of your candle's beautiful fragrance by using it within a reasonable time. Like anything crafted with care, candle fragrance has a natural timeline. Over time, the scent may soften—especially if the candle is exposed to heat, light, or air for long periods. For the fullest sensory experience, we recommend enjoying your candle within 6 to 12 months of purchase. Think of it like opening a favourite bottle of wine: best savoured in its prime.

All Ouverture London candles are crafted with a high fragrance load of 10%. This means a richer scent throw, both when the candle is unlit (cold throw) and while burning (hot throw), filling your space with layered, lingering fragrance.

Lower fragrance load of the industry standard of around 6–8%. Weaker scent throw, doesn't fill your space, scent disperses quickly.

All Ouverture London candles are made with fragrance blends free from phthalates. By leaving them out, we ensure a cleaner, more conscious burn - without compromising on depth or complexity.

Goes with the cheaper option of using phthalates - group of synthetic chemicals often used to extend scent but increasingly scrutinised for their potential health and environmental impact.

We use 100% GMO-free, ProTerra Certified, sustainably sourced soy wax. Soy is a cleaner, plant-based alternative that burns longer, produces less soot, and helps maintain better air quality—making it the natural choice for a more refined, conscious burn.

Uses cheaper paraffin wax, is a petroleum byproduct known to release small amounts of toxins like benzene and toluene (substances also found in diesel fumes) when burned.

Our bespoke engraved brass holders aren’t just beautiful, they’re made to last. Once your candle has finished, the vessel can be gently cleaned and repurposed (and coming soon - refills)

Uses generic, off the shelf glass holders. More energy intensive to recycle. Not chosen with repurposing or refilling in mind and so ultimately adds to more landfill.
