Our Eco Journey
In her career as a wine expert our founder, Aleesha Hansel, has been vocal in her mission to make the wine industry more sustainable - both environmentally and socially.
Among other things this led her to launch a campaign about heavy glass bottle weights which was picked up internationally, including in the renowned Washington Post and to become an ambassador for The Fairtrade Foundation.
As such then, when forming Ouverture London it was imperative that this ethos became a core pillar our brand philosophy.
Each ingredient and product has therefore been chosen and sourced with sustainability in mind.
Considered production & packaging
WAX
Crafted from responsibly sourced soybean oil which is GMO free and vegan friendly. It is also free from paraffin, palm oil, sulphates and petroleum to name a few. Our wax is ProTerra Foundation Certified. The ProTerra Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims to promote and advance sustainability and prioritise transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain and hold a deep concern for corporate social responsibility. They focus on mitigating the potential negative impacts of herbicide-resistant and genetically modified crops on ecosystems and biodiversity.
WICKS
Our candle wicks are made from unbleached cotton and interwoven with linen. You may be surprised to learn that some wicks contain metal in order to keep them rigid - this was traditionally lead. There are no metal in our wicks.
HOLDERS
Our brass holders are designed to be reused (and refilled) however as a cradle-to-cradle metal it is 100% recyclable without any material loss. The recycling of brass using 95% less energy than the production of new brass and is considerably less than other materials, like glass. Being lightweight brass also means a smaller carbon footprint than glass when it comes to transportation.
PACKAGING
Our candle tube packaging is plastic free and Forest Stewardship Council Certified. The FSC is a non-profit organisation, providing trusted solutions to help protect the world’s forests and tackle today’s deforestation, climate, and biodiversity challenges. Certification ensures forest products come from responsibility managed forests meeting strict environmental, social and economic standards and can be traced from the forest to the consumer. FSC is the only certification scheme for forest products that is endorsed by major environmental charities, such as Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust
The colours used on our brand packaging are created using vegetable ink, which unlike traditional ink is petroleum-free, and so lowers environmental impact, reduces VOC emissions, comes from a naturally renewable source and ensures the product is fully recyclable.
OILS
Ouverture London candles are scented using a unique blend of essential oils and premium fragrance oils. The essential oils are naturally derived and the fragrance oils are of the highest quality. We do not use phthalates in our scent blends.
MADE IN THE UK
Supporting the UK economy and reduces carbon emissions from excess transportation.
HAND POURED
To ensure the best product possible.
